Chikusai Katō (1818-1886) drew the fifty-three pictures included in Koishikawa Shokubutsuen Sōmoku Zusetsu (Koishikawa Botanical Garden Plant Atlas). This picture book was published between 1881 and 1886 and was co-edited by Keisuke itō (1803-1901) and Kaku Hika (1816-1894). Chikusai drew his plant subjects accurately, similar to European botanical drawings. It was one of the first Japanese plant books to be printed using multicolor lithography.
